So Nyuh Shi Dae- Tell Me Your Wish

Girl group SNSD returns with another ultra-cute mini-album.

With a single track that almost became as huge as Gee, SNSD have returned with an album that is very much them; pure bubblegum pop with cutesy lyrics. That sound can become tiresome but the concept is cute: a girl longing for a boy and everything that comes with it. Some tracks are a bit suggestive and others speak about love in a very Disney-like way. Sure, the mini-album is not bad but it is not great either.

Tell Me your Wish (Genie) enjoyed a time of success on different K-pop charts. Perhaps not as huge as Gee, but the new characteristic “raise leg” dance was very much copied and appreciated. The song is enjoyable and addictive. With its electronic sound and easy to learn chorus. It makes anyone want to dance.

With a flirty and hopeful sound, Etude is the second track. The cute factor is quite high with the girls acting like fairy godmothers, trying to help a girl to gain a boy's attention. Overall it's a sweet song and nice to listen to.

The mini-album takes a turn with Boyfriend, not because of the sound but due to the needy lyrics. The girl complains about how she is not being seen even though she has “A nice body, and my V-line face too (seems like you're not interested, seems like you're not interested). I also got a new hairstyle which looks like those of TV stars (like TV stars)." Ignoring the lyrics, it sounds like a cute song and works as something to pass the time.

With a sound and lyrics that would be more at home in a Disney album, My Child is a ballad that speaks of love in a very child-like manner. With an impressive orchestra in the background the song seems powerful, yet the voices of the girls get drowned by the sound. What makes this a more Disney song is the break, a very distinguished little march with a flute. All I can imagine as I listen to this song is a female Disney lead character singing this at the top of her lungs on a grassy hill with blue birds flying above her head.

The following Girlfriend is sung entirely in a nasal tone. And here the cute factor is amped to the skies, with a frilly melody and loads and loads of falsettos. To listen to the whole song is a challenge, but it does get positive points because it resembles an anime song.

The last song on this six track mini-album is One Year Later (feat. Onew from SHINee), a ballad about the regret after a breakup. This track features a lovely melody that gains force from an orchestra, piano and a guitar. Sung by Jessica from SNSD and Onew from SHINee, this could have been a great ballad but the vocals are quite drowned by the strong melody and it is a bit hard to hear them. Besides that, it is a very charming song that is soothing and pretty.

This release is slightly better than the previous The First Mini Album “Gee” and similar in the way that it contains only one very strong track. Here SNSD do what they do best: be cute, which is probably more then enough for their fans. But they are not only pretty faces and there is certainly some great voice talent there - otherwise, listening to their songs would be impossible.

SNSD ended promotions for their second mini-album during August of this year. They are now concentrating on the members' solo activities. SM Entertainment released a statement that an overseas promotion is being organized for the future.
