After signing up with SM Entertainment, he was picked to participate in a five member boyband called Smile, in which Donghae would also take part in. However, the band was never made and Leeteuk joined Super Junior 05. He was chosen to be the group leader because he is the oldest one, even though he was born only 10 days before Heechul, and is considered the fifth best dancer in the band.

Leeteuk had a brief appearance as an extra in the drama All About Eve in 2000, and in the drama Rainbow Romance in 2006. In the movie Attack on the Pin-Up Boys, starring the group themselves, Leeteuk had been signed up to play one of the main parts but, due to a car accident, he instead had only a small appearance in the movie, in a secret role.

He currently hosts the show You can Fly, with Yuri from So Nyuh Shi Dae (Girls' Generation).
